How to Trust God in Tough Times

Lost your job? Failed a class? Have no friends? A marriage in troubled waters?

In hard times like these, it can be hard to maintain hope.

Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith? (Mark 4:35-41)

Like the disciples who were terrified when a storm erupted in the Sea of Galilee, we too become blinded by the storms in our lives that we forget the power & love of God. Our present scenarios take our attention away from God’s eternal promises – his promises to strengthen us and provide for us until the end. In tough times, we run to him in a panic, begging for a solution, when in fact He’s been by our side faithfully all the time.

So, how can we strengthen our faith & trust in God through troubled times?

- Learn More About God’s Promises

Let the Word of God be the anchor that keep you in place when your life seems to be spiraling out of control. When you days get darker and things get chaotic, let these words help you see things from his perspective:

- He will be by your side always

“The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth. He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.” (Psalm 145: 18-19)

- Believe in his perfect timing

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

- He is more powerful than your problems, let him take control

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

- Trust in God’s plan for you

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

- Whatever you’re going through is for the future good

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

- He’ll be the strength you need to get through the storm

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10)

Pour out your heart to God in prayer

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

Instead of sinking deeper into panic and pain, pray! Say what you have in your heart & head to God from the moment you start your day to moment you go to bed. Share with Him your worries and ask Him to bring you peace.

Keep your eyes on God always

“So, we don't look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.” (2 Corinthians 4:18)

After reading the scriptures and praying for peace, don’t just return to your routine. Let these two actions form the foundation of your daily life. Always keep your gaze on God. Stay focused on eternity. The storm may get intense, but He will always be stronger.

Find purpose in trials & praise him

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
(James 1:2-3)

God places hardships in your life for a reason. It may seem counterintuitive to praise Him for the hard times in your life, but he uses them to teach you about trust & perseverance. Trust that everything, the highest highs and the lowest of lows, will refine you into a better person and strengthen you as a follower of Christ.
